DAY 2 Hong Kong – Sham Shui Po 深水埗 (2012)

Since we had enough of shopping at Citygate Outlet at Tung Chung, we changed our venue to Sham Shui Po by using MTR.

It takes around 25 minutes from Tung Chung MTR station to Sham Po Shui MTR station. My memory of Sham Shui Po is the yummy local food and items are cheaper than other area of Hongkong since it is a neighbourhood.

Of Course Food is our priority for this Hong kong trip! so we searched for the popular Tim Ho Wan Dimsum (Sham Shui Po branch). 3 years ago,I had eaten this dimsum shop at Mongkok and I can’t forget the taste especially the freshly Baked Char Sha bun!!! That’s why i must bring my parents to eat it!

Of course you can try it in Singapore – Official website: http://www.timhowan.com/

Needed to walk at least 15 minutes from MTR to the restaurant. It’s in the clothing wholesale area of Shamshuipo so there’s not a whole lot around (except for some children’s clothing wholesalers around the corner)

The branch at Sham Shui Po (more than 20 tables) is much much spacious than the one at Mongkok , which only has around 10 tables and always need to queue for half hour to a hr for a table~

Not much customers ( less than 10 people) since it was just 5pm, non-peak hour. hee..

Once we were seated in less than 5 minutes, the waitress auntie gave us a plastic pitcher with hot tea without asking which type of tea that we want. Unlike other Dimsum places, we can choose the type of tea.

We drank the tea yet it was super bland and cold, so we asked for another jug.The waitress told us that we needed to pay for the 2nd jug of tea, even we didn’t finish the 1st jug.

(HKD2 per pax/jug)

A bit shocked of the service that we received..

Not much to choose from the menu. Anyway, we ordered 4 dishes –

  • Baked chaw sha bun (酥皮焗叉燒包) – HKD12
  • Steamed chicken feet with black bean sauce (豉汁蒸鳳爪) – HKD12
  • BBQ Pork Cheungfan (叉燒腸粉)- HKD15
  • Prawn siew mai (燒賣) – HKD18

BUT the bun was not as hot as it should have been if it is freshly baked. The top wasn’t as crispy and it was abit too sweet. Rest of the dishes are so-so.

We were super disappointed!!! Way below the standard that I had before… The bun was soft with a light crisp top and are filled with succulent BBQ pork when I tried at the Mongkok branch. It was so deliciously it blew me away.

Luckily we only ordered 4 dishes…  I dont think i would ever come to this branch again.

I think I must go back to Mongkok main branch to try it again… (Updated in 2013: Mongkok branch has closed, so pls go to Hong Kong Station (Podium Level 1, IFC Mall) Central.)

After the dimsum, we walked back to the market near the Sham Shui Po Mtr station. There are many stores which sell food, clothes and etc… And also there are stores on the streets, just like a night market.

Since Sham Shui Po is a neighbourhood, the price here are reasonable and good! I bought a pink casing for Samsung Note, even though I have not bought it. hee.. cheap! Around SGD 9. Oh ya, in Hongkong, you need to try the egg tart!

After all shopping, time to eat again. hee.. I must go back to the Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong (公和荳品廠 ) Beancurd shop that I ate before!!! Around 7pm, we were outside the small shop which has only around 10 tables. Packed! Needed to wait for a table…

All the waiting are worth!!! Here is my fried tofu and beancurd!!!

I would say this beancurd dessert 豆花 is one of the BEST that I have eaten in my life! Smooth~ Remind me of my grandma~ It has a pretty rich soy flavor, and together with the syrup it tasted absolutely refreshing. (HKD9)

Beside Beancurd dessert, you can try their soya bean drink~ ^^

They have a big frying pan and just fry it in front of you. Freshly fried tofu!!! ^^ can eat with their chilli and soya sauce~

Fried tofu with minced fish 煎釀三寶 (HKD6/plate of 2)

wow.. Super full now!!! Time to go back to Hotel~~~

The next stop will be Macao~ Macao, Here i come again!!!

After Macao trip, it would be Shen Zhen, then back to Hongkong Wong Tai sin temple, Tsim Sha shui, Mongkok!
